What are cookies?
The cookies are small sized text strings that a Web site can send and install, while browsing, on the user's device, in order to store some information about this person; this information will then be retransmitted to the web server that hosts the site on subsequent accesses.
What are cookies used for?
Cookies are used for different purposes: to perform computer authentication (for example to access to your personal account), track sessions and preserve user settings when changing from one web page to another (remembering the language viewing, storing information on specific configurations regarding users who access the web server, storing browsing preferences, collecting statistical data (for example to monitor access to the site), marketing.
Cookies can be divided into two broad categories, from the subjective point of view: first-party cookies, installed by the owner of the site the user is visiting, and third-party cookies, installed by third party (Google, Facebook, etc ...).
Regarding the time profile we have session cookies, which are automatically deleted when the browser is closed; persistent cookies, which instead remain until the set deadline.
Finally, cookies can be divided into technical or necessary cookies, necessary for browsing the website in order to guarantee the service, for example used to perform authentication, remember in which language the site is viewed, etc ...; analytics or statistical cookies, used by website managers to collect information on the number of users and how they visit the site, and then process statistics on the service and its use; profiling cookies or marketing used to bring to certain persons, identified or identifiable, specific actions or behavioral patterns recurring in the use of the features offered by the service (pattern) in order to create profiles to be grouped into clusters, so that it is possible to send targeted advertising messages.
For the purpose of their installation and use, technical cookies do not require the user's consent, and are therefore also indicated as necessary, while profiling cookies, both first and third-party, can only be used with the consent of part of the user; finally, analytics or statistical cookies are compared to technical cookies only if they collect anonymous data, otherwise they are also subject to the user's prior consent.
